Bird, Bloodhawk

Pack-hunting hawk. A small beast.

This hawk is much larger than normal and gets its name from its burgundy cap and tail feathers.

It can see very well. It can’t retreat or be frightened when fighting humans.

Attacks (2/round)

Fly-By. The bloodhawk makes a melee attack (1 damage) and flies away. Attacks against it on its turn have disadvantage.

Razor Talons. The bloodhawk makes a melee attack (1 damage) against one target. The target must save or start bleeding. They’ll lose 1 HP per turn unless somebody uses an action to stop the bleeding. Hit or miss, until the bloodhawks next turn, all other bloodhawks have advantage on their attacks against the target.

It can see very well. It can’t retreat or be frightened when fighting humans.

In a swarm, creatures are immune to being grappled or attacked by single target spells, and resist mind and weapon damage. However, they take double damage from area of effect attacks.

Attacks (1/round)

Coordinated Razor Pecks. To dodge a swarm’s attack, the roll has to beat 10 + the swarm’s HP. It inflicts 1D6 damage. The target then starts bleeding. They’ll lose 1 HP per turn unless somebody uses an action to stop the bleeding.

  3. Spoor: A small critter falls from the sky.

Salvaging the body

Hawk’s meat has a dry, leathery texture, but is still edible. Its feathers are prized by bowyers.

DM Notes

Blood Hawks first appeared in the first edition Fiend Folio. It’s basically a falcon the size of an eagle that hunts in pack. One throwaway detail that carried up to 3rd edition is its hatred of humans.</details>
